Frank Propok of Australian lure fame and the Australian Lure Encyclopedia said in Freshwater Fishing magazine, edition 98.....quote “ I believe Huey makes the best Spotted Dog coloured lures anywhere in the world these days”…. “These lures are sure fire trout takers in the Rapala CD stratosphere”
And this from the guys at Fishing Monthly: Wooden lure aficionados might be more interested in Huey’s Lures. These Tasmanian timber lures are carved from Huon Pine by local fishing identity Huey. Being handmade, no two are exactly the same and while they may lack the finishing touches that plastic moulding allows, each one is certainly unique, which is part of the appeal of wooden lures. In particular, Huey produces some neat trout orientated minnows, which are worth checking out, particularly in the ‘spotted dog’ colour scheme. The brighter coloured minnows (particularly pink) are also worth trying on ultra-shallow flathead waters.

TALBOTS LAGOON
Well, after making the choice to go to Talbots lagoon this morning i am just shocked at how well the jungle shallow diver works. I started off using a dawia double clutch (that costs a arm and leg) to only get nothing. I went though my tackle box and thought i would try a hueys with frogs around the bank i thought the jungle might be the go to lure. First cast into the many logs that surround Talbots lagoon and it got smacked by a nice brown going around 3 pounds. I thought to myself was that just luck or am i on the money with my lure choice. I looked behind me to see a little open water where there was no logs and a little deeper. After dropping the jungle behind the kayak to do a little trolling it was only a matter of a couple of minutes and i was onto my second fish. After pulling 5 fish out of the same hole no rounder then half a football field over the matter of a hour. I was convinced that i might have the right choice haha after picking up another 3 fish on the same lure i was more then happy to say the least. But all good things must come to a end as a log thought it liked my hueys more then i did , i will attach a few photos Daniel.J

He put Gumbi lure on and bang his rod went off and when kerry saw it ,straight away said, this is a big fish
Trent was using the rod i gave him 1-3kg
after 20 minutes into the fight , said my arms hurting some one take over for me
Kerry said to him good keep that rod up and keep the pressure on the fish
we made him fight the fish it came to the top then went deep came to the boat and ran again and again
Trent still complaining about his arm hurting and Kerry still telling him yes it hurts but keep going
Kerry manoeuvring the boat as the fish went with Trent on the rod Kerry at the helm
we got the fish and im so glad that we encouraged him not to give up
as he is the happiest ive seen him for a while made his day and mine and Kerry,s
to watch a kid battle with a monster fish was worth the trip alone ! from a report on Fishtas.Com.(Craigbourne Dam)

,From 'Craytail'
Went for a fish up the big lake on Sunday to blow the cobwebs out. Got up there about 6:30am and headed out from Brandum Boat ramp, done a few laps of Brandum and Brownie Bay but no joy, fish were tight up against structure but not interested in chewing. Few other boats launched in the next hour or so and one started tracking me so I pulled the lines in and shot off elsewhere. There were no insects about and no bites on the flat lines so it was out with the lead core. Caught my first about 12:15pm chunky little nugget about 4lbs. Funny thing was it was on a Hueys and my normal killer cobra hadn't had a touch. Fish was full of scud, stick caddis and a couple of galaxia. Next one hit the Hueys again about an hour later. I wont go on about it too much as I lost it at the boat when the snap swivel gave way but it would have been the largest I have ever hooked in the Great Lake, not sure of its exact size but I have caught a fair number of 5 and 6 pounders and it dwarfed those. Bloody thing tail walked 3 times before I got it to the boat. As the afternoon progressed the killer cobra caught 4 smaller fish about 2lbs each and the Hueys accounted for another 1 which bought the tally to 6 before I pulled up stumps about 4:30pm. The water level has risen that much the fish weren't in the spots I consistently caught them last year. I had to do a bit of hunting about before I got amongst them plus, did a good 4 or 5 hours with flat line and not a touch Have never tried lures that size in the Great Lake before always went for the smaller models. Main reason I got the 8cm was for the sea runners but they will be getting a few more swims in the fresh after Sundays eye opener. I can say that the Hueys troll better than ralpalas, you can cover quite a range of speeds and the action is more aggressive. I would say a fair amount of work has gone into getting that action right. The lure in question is on the 2016 list of Hueys lures .(Grape lure) I have fished the Great Lake a good many years and I have never had fish of that size caught so soon after each other. I have caught some fairly large bags on ol mate killer cobra and it is my go to lure in the Great Lake. You generally get the average 2lb fish with a bigger one occasionally. Need a few more test runs to confirm it but the experience has been an eye opener to say the least |
